A pair of inventors (husband and wife) use a time-travel machine to escape our “dead-end” world, only to arrive in a distant future where mankind’s remnants are lorded over by mysterious unseen Protectors. The couple must discover how humanity wound up in such a predicament, and whether there’s any way out. Along the way, they discover many oddities they never expected to see in their “perfect” future: a dentist who genetically poisoned the world’s water supply so that all humans have only two teeth — one upper, one lower — thus making dentistry easier; a freeze placed on all new inventions, though existing inventions have been built upon for so many centuries that they barely resemble their original form (like vinyl siding that can display saved images of seasons past); and computer programs with holographic bodies that have earned the right to vote.
