The year is 52 BC, as the Romans under Julius Caesar fight the last few Celts for control
of Gaul. A Roman officer by the name of Aulus Hirtius, a close friend of Caesars,
is wounded and becomes separated from his legion, accidentally taking refuge in a sacred
Druid grove. There he meets the lovely Druidess named Cotuates, who tends his wounds and
teaches him the surprisingly sophisticated ways of her people. Aulus must decide whether
to be true to the Roman ways he was born with, or try to save the few surviving Celts
and the remnants of their religion. Stirring battles offset the tender story of Aulus
and Cotuates, and illustrate the possibility that the Romans were not at all the good
guys our history books teach us.
